Company: The Surrealists
Conroy Maddox (1912-2005) was a surrealist painter, collagist and writer, who joined the Surrealist Group in England in 1938. Together with John and Robert Melville, he founded a surrealist group in Birmingham that flourished in the 1930s and 1940s. His work spans a variety of themes and techniques and, like his Parisian counterparts, he held strong anti-religious views. But his anticlericalism was tongue-in-cheek and humorous rather than caustic: in one suite of works, he imagines a drinking binge with a cigarette-smoking nun in silk stockings. Silvano Levy explores the life and work of this colourful artist.
