NYJO is a glittering showcase for the UK’s finest young professional jazz musicians, combining a hard-swinging rhythm section and a raft of hugely talented soloists. Under the Artistic Direction of Mark Armstrong, the 23-piece orchestra perform around 40 concerts a year both nationally and internationally. Over its 52-year history, NYJO has helped launch the careers of many of the country’s most renowned jazz musicians including Guy Barker, Amy Winehouse, Mark Nightingale and Laura Jurd. Tonight’s Great American Songbook programme explores the very best jazz standards from the 1920s to the 1950s, with classics from Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael and George Gershwin.
NYJO will begin the day at Aberystwyth Arts Centre with a series of workshops, including an open access improvisation workshop for students from Ceredigion, in partnership with Ceredigion Music Service, and a side-by-side workshop with the 6 Counties Big Band spearheaded by Carmarthenshire Music Service, before the 6 Counties Big Band joins NYJO on stage for the evening concert. You can book for the workshop here.
