Aberystwyth is situated on the beautiful coast of Mid Wales and is a national and regional centre of importance. It is home to Aberystwyth University, the National Library of Wales and the Welsh Books Council and to the regional offices of the Welsh Assembly Government. It has on many occasions staked its claim to be the ‘cultural capital of Wales’. The town itself has a population of 17,000, which is enhanced by some 9,000 students and by tourists during the holiday season. The County of Ceredigion has a total population of 79,000. The Arts Centre provides a valuable resource for the University staff, students and their families, and for the whole community of Mid Wale as well as attracting visitors from around the UK, Europe and all corners of the globe for the bigger festivals and high profile events and projects, helping to put Aberystwyth on the map.
