Czech Republic, 2012, 1 hour 20 minutes, B/W animation, subtitles
Based on a cult graphic novel this is a beautifully realised, superbly atmospheric portrait of a fractured loner and his country’s recent history. 1989, as the Berlin Wall falls and the world he’s known all his life changes forever, Alois Nebel is working as a village stationmaster in the remote mountains close to the Polish border. Haunted by the violent post-war expulsion of the Germans he witnessed as a child, Alois prefers old timetables to people, but when a mysterious mute man returns for revenge his world is turned upside down. With its film noir feel filtered through a typically Czech sense of the fragility of the real, this moody animation is akin to Waltz with Bashir in the stylish way it deals with the horrors of recent history. Winner of European Film Award for Best Animated Film 2012.
Part of Wales One World film festival.
