Concert | Solem Quartet, Rosanna Cooper, David Campbell, Ruth Nelson Great Hall, Aberystwyth Arts Centre | £18 (£16) | 8pm
This programme sandwiches a beautiful rarity and a new commission between two great classical chamber works for strings. Mozart’s four mature string quintets are widely considered to be among his finest chamber works while Beethoven’s opus 59 (‘Rasoumovsky’) quartets are amongst the masterpieces of his middle or ‘heroic’ period. Herbert Howells’ Rhapsodic Quintet is a beautiful and elegiac work, written after the First World War and full of regret and nostalgia for all that had been lost. Richard Blackford’s new work, commissioned for MusicFest 2017, for mezzo-soprano, clarinet and string quartet will be performed by Rosanna Cooper, Solem Quartet and David Campbell. His Clarinet Quintet was performed at MusicFest in 2009 and again in 2016; his Great Animal Orchestra Symphony was performed at MusicFest in 2014 and his Polymetric Studies in 2016.
The Solem Quartet is returning to Aberystwyth as MusicFest resident ensemble for the fourth year running. The quartet came together when studying at the University of Manchester and takes its name from the University’s motto Arduus ad solem (‘Striving for the sun’). During 2017 the quartet have started on a five year venture to perform the complete cycle of Beethoven string quartets, commissioned by a MusicFest supporter.
