Black Smoke Rising is an extraordinarily powerful exhibition by sculptor Tim Shaw RA. The centrepiece ‘Casting a Dark Democracy’ is inspired by the image of a hooded man being tortured in Abu Ghraib, first seen 10 years ago. This image of inhumanity remains very potent, stirring primitive fears; the exhibition speaks of human conflict through the ages.
‘There is an attempt to understand the nature of who we are through a process of reduction, a stripping down of the human condition to its primordial bare bones. I am interested in aspects of humanity that do not change.’
Curated by Indra Khanna and produced in partnership with mac Birmingham and Aberystwyth Arts Centre
