For our first project with ARTIST ROOMS we present an exhibition of Robert Mapplethorpe’s photography. Mapplethorpe is one of the key artists of the late 20th century and we are delighted to be able to bring this outstanding collection of his work to Aberystwyth. Encompassing self portraits and portraits from throughout the artist’s career, as well as a small number of flower and still life works, the exhibition will allow audiences in Wales to experience something of the quality and the range of Mapplethorpe’s extraordinary oeuvre.
The exhibition will be accompanied by an innovative learning and participation programme, which will include events instigated and directed by young people from the area.
ARTIST ROOMS is jointly owned by Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland and was established through The d’Offay Donation in 2008, with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Art Fund, and the Scottish and British Governments. ARTIST ROOMS On Tour is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, the Art Fund and, in Scotland, the National Lottery through Creative Scotland, making available the ARTIST ROOMS collection of international modern and contemporary art to galleries throughout the UK.
