A special 'WATCH DANCE CLASS' is available from 12.30pm on the day of the performance. This is a fantastic opportunity for photographers, artists and any other interested parties to come along to the theatre and watch the dancers take their daily class on stage. The session generally lasts around an hour and is a great insight to the life of a professional dancer, and a rare opportunity to capture the dancers bodies in motion. Watch Dance Class is free for ticket holders to our evening show (you must have a ticket to attend Watch Dance Class).
What is watch dance class?
Watch Dance Class is a rare opportunity to see professional dancers take their daily class on stage. This class will consist of warm ups and a mix of contemporary and ballet exercises. We invite ticket holders for our evening performance to attend and observe the class, either to simply watch or to photograph and sketch the dancers as they move. The session is usually of particular interest to Photographers, Life drawing classes, and those wishing to pursue a career in dance.

“ NDCW have in recent years given access to ticket holders to watch the dance class before the performance. As a photographer interested in the dynamics and lines created by modern dance this is a wonderful opportunity for creative work. It has impressed on me that the grace, athleticism and shear skill of the performances don't just appear magically but are the result of a great deal of hard work and training. It is not just the management of this progressive company but the dancers themselves that should be thanked for allowing such access.“
How much does it cost?
The session is free to attend so long as the patron holds a ticket to our Spring Tour.
How long does the session last?
Usually Watch Dance Class lasts around an hour.
Can I bring paint or just a sketch pad and pencils/pens?
This is at the discretion of the theatre itself. Usually we advise against paint in the auditorium.
Can I use flash photography?
No, using flash could be dangerous for the dancers as it may distract them.
Will I be permitted to sell any images I make?
No, but they may be used for portfolio uses, please read NCDW image agreement form (available on the day or via NDCW)
