PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION (Mussorgsky / Ravel)
Dvorak: Carnival Overture
Morfydd Owen: Nocturne
Paul Mealor: Euphonium Concerto
Soloist: Philippe Schwartz
Conductor: David Russell Hulme
Aberystwyth’s very own symphony orchestra mixes familiar favourites with new discoveries. Ravel’s brilliant orchestration of Mussorgsky is a classic and set to show the orchestra at its best. Dvorak’s exhilarating ‘Carnival’, one of the most popular of all concert overtures, starts the evening, which marks the centenary of tragic genius Morfydd Owen’s early death with her enchanting ‘Nocturne.’ Welsh composer Paul Mealor shot to fame with ‘Ubi Caritas’ at the last-but-one royal wedding. His tuneful and colourful Euphonium Concerto features the dazzling virtuosity and sublime sound of Phillipe Schwartz – quite simply one of the world’s finest players. Philo’s concerts are great live-music events. Come celebrate with us.
