WOW Presents: Toni Erdmann (15)
(Maren Ade, Germany 2016, 159mins, subtitled, no ads, with intro)
Winner FIPRESCI Best Film award, Cannes Film Festival 2016
This is an astonishing, accomplished, broad and outrageous tragi-comedy about the strained relationship between a father and daughter. A divorced teacher with a baffling penchant for wacky humour, Winifried frequently dons ridiculous wigs and false teeth. His daughter Ines, a sleek oil company executive, is no longer amused by such jokes. But Winifried believes she is unhappy and so kindly decides to show up at her offices in a new guise: that of ‘Toni Erdmann’, to help out. Highly original and at times hilarious, it’s also achingly moving and astutely critical of many aspects of contemporary life.
“Playful and profound by turns, it spins a complex and multi-layered story from what seems to be a simple premise.” Independent
