Director: Hirokazu Kore-eda
Starring: Ayase Haruka, Nagasawa Masami, Kaho
Japan, 2015, 2 hours 8 minutes, Japanese with English subtitles
The brilliant Kore-eda's (I Wish, Still Waiting) amazing ability to get natural performances from his cast creates a real sense of family life unfolding. Three sisters take in their younger half-sister, who they meet for the first time at their father’s funeral. There’s the responsible older sister, the fun-loving good-time girl, and the goofy youngest, all sharing their grandmother’s old house. As we observe their daily lives the film touches on themes of stolen childhood, family ties and responsibility. With four beautiful lead performances, this delicately observed story of sisterly solidarity is full of quiet joy and simple pleasures.
“a seductive and engrossing celebration of family” Sight & Sound
