(Lee Chang-dong, South Korea 2018, 148 minutes, subtitles)
In this mysterious thriller, Lee Chang-dong (Poetry) expands upon a Murakami Haruki short story to create a psychologically engrossing, moral tale about modern Korean youth, wounded love, class conflict and male envy. Countryboy Jongsu falls in love with childhood friend Haemi, who dumps him for Ben, a wealthy playboy with an unnerving obsession. Set against the contrasting backdrops of affluent Gangnam and a farming village on the border with North Korea, this immaculately directed film references William Faulkner and The Great Gatsby, slowburning to a scorching climax.
