Director: Leila Sansour
Starring: Leila Sansour, Marti Bell, and the people of Bethlehem
Palestine/UAE/UK/USA, 2013, 1 hour 30 minutes, subtitles
The tragedy of the Palestinians encapsulated in the life of one family and one town – Bethlehem. Director Sansour (Jeremy Hardy vs Israeli Army) returns to her home town on a mission to ensure that Bethlehem stays a free and open city. Ever optimistic she sets up a tourist project and promotes the Bethlehem passport the kind of first step on which peace processes are built. Meanwhile the construction of the ‘separation wall’ slowly strangles the most famous little town in the world. As one man whose business is ruined says “Security. They’ve swallowed the whole world with this one word.”. This is a powerful, very personal film that shows the hope that drives Leila’s campaign but also faces up to the limits of what she can achieve.
“a fierce, poignant film” Guardian
“One of the most remarkable and moving documentaries I have seen about this unreported story.” John Snow
Leila Sansour will answer questions after the film via Skype
