(Michaelangelo Antonioni, USA 1970, 111mins)
A striking road movie, where two students travel across America and encounter student protests and corrupt authority. The film is remembered for culminating in one of the most memorable scenes of explosive violence in American cinema. Antonioni’s use of editing, repetition and music has created a film that explores the psychology of American youth in the late 1960s, and presents one of the great visualisations of this chaotic time. The soundtrack is also significant for its use of popular and iconic bands of the period, including Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead and Roy Orbison.
