Terry Gilliam’s satire on a bureaucratic and consumer-driven society has created its own cult myth. Part audacious fantasy, part sci-fi noir, part black comedy, it draws on the influence of Kafka and Orwell to create the world of Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce), a low-level government employee with dreams of heroism, who is sucked a terrorist plot to destroy the nightmarish Ministry of Information. Gilliam won his own battle against Hollywood by insisting on releasing the film with his original bleak ending, and in turn, created a cult film whose influence proved to be immense and far-reaching.
