Director: Gabriel Mascaro
Starring: Dandra De Morais, Geova Manoel Dos Santos
Brazil, 2014, 1 hour 17 minutes, subtitles
Set against the stunning backdrop of a remote coastal village in Brazil, this is an engagingly episodic, bewitching film that gently contemplates the nature of life and death. Shirley looks after her elderly grandmother, drives a tractor at the local coconut plantation (there are striking shots of workers hacking down the coconuts from massive palm trees), and hangs out with her lover Jeison. A surprise discovery confronts them with the duel between the sea and the land, youth and age, loss and memory. Fabulously beautiful images of the simple rhythms of everyday life are smartly balanced with Mascaro’s musing on the power of wind and sea and some genuinely amusing moments.
