Look Back in Anger
Bold Productions & Aberystwyth Arts Centre
By John Osborne
First performed in May 1956, ‘Look Back in Anger’ quickly became one of the few plays that have changed the future of theatre. Never before had relationships been subject to such microscopic examination on stage. Osborne, as the ‘angry youngman’, struck a chordwith the young people of that moment. It divided audiences, being damned both as ‘kitchen sink’ and praised as ‘theatre of reality’. The complex relationships within the family and marriage are expressed through funny, tragic and violent emotion, set against the background of particular political and social comment. However, the play is not just a classic to be revived to remind us of its historic importance. In this exciting new production Bold Productions has revisited the script and presents a performance true to the aims of the original but relevant to now- touching the nerve of contemporary audiences.
