The Glass Menagerie
By Tennessee Williams
Directed by Kate Wasserberg
Look over your left shoulder, Laura, and make a wish!
What shall I wish for, Mother?
Happiness! Good fortune!
The Glass Menagerie is Tennessee Williams’ first great play and one of the greatest classics of the American stage. In the squalor and poverty of a St Louis tenement in 1937, the Wingfields dream of a different life… Amanda desperately clings to the southern gentility of her past, to a charming girlhood where she once received 17 gentleman callers in a single afternoon. Tom endures the grinding boredom of work in a shoe factory, scribbling poems in secret and ruthlessly planning his escape. And Laura plays with the glass menagerie; crippled by shyness, dreaming of the boy she loved in high school. All hopes are fixed on finding a gentleman caller for Laura, but when Tom brings Jim O’Connor home for dinner, dreams and reality collide with disastrous consequences.
Wryly comic and deeply moving, The Glass Menagerie is both a heartbreaking family drama and a poetic examination of the pain of rejection.
