Nuffield Theatre

By Lisa Evans | Directed by Russ Tunney

In the American Deep South half a century ago change was coming, a change that was soundtracked by the intense uplifting power of negro spiritual music. A cast of 4, directed by Russ Tunney, present this remarkable story of one family's fight for freedom and progress. This play is wonderfully enjoyable yet deeply resonant, a story of redemption, family history, and social change, in equal parts joyful and moving. The haunting melodies of songs like Let My People Go and Swing Low echo beautifully around the stage.

A unique celebration of freedom which still resounds in today's world.

Suitable for Ages 12+

Stori hynod drawiadol am frwydr un teulu i ennill rhyddid a symud ymlaen. Yn cynnwys melodiau hyfryd dyma ddathliad unigryw o ryddid sy'n gwbl berthnasol i'r byd heddiw. Yn addas ar gyfer oedolion a phlant dros 12 oed.

"A cry for freedom. A fierce protest against the way history, literature, and the cinema has portrayed black people a singing, smiling and cotton-picking. The great strength of Lisa Evans' play is the device of the child as narrator - innocent, frank, curious. Familiar Negro Spirituals which express more powerfully than anything the beauty and dignity that gave the lie to servility. It is the least strident and most lyrical of protest plays." - The Guardian
