Poetry Evening: Paul Groves, Tiffany Atkinson & John Barnie

Seren invites you to a poetry triple bill with readings by Paul Groves, Tiffany Atkinson & John Barnie in the Arts Centre Bookshop on Thursday evening at 6.30pm.

Paul Groves' work is characterised by a sharp wit and pitch-black humour, coupled with an unsurpassed mastery of form. In "Qwerty", his fifth collection of poetry, he again ranges freely from the sinister to the unsettling and the deeply shocking. Yet such is technical adroitness, he remains very much the poet's poet. Paul Groves was brought up in Wales, lived for twenty-five years in the Forest of Dean, and has now recrossed the border and lives in Monmouth. He has been strikingly successful in national and international competitions and has published poetry and criticism in a wide range of periodicals, including "London Magazine", "Poetry Review" and "The Times Literary Supplement".

Tiffany Atkinson is a lecturer in English and Creative Writing at Aberystwyth University. She is the editor of The Body: A Reader(Palgrave, 2004) and her current research examines representations of "the body in pain" with especial reference to the discourses of anatomy, philosophy, psychoanalysis and racial difference. Her first collection of poetry, Kink and Particle (Seren, 2006), was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation, and winner of the Jerwood Aldeburgh First Collection Award. Her poetry has also been published in Seren Selections (Seren, 2006), New Welsh Review, Poetry Wales, Orbis, Oxford Poetry, Poetry Review, MsLexia and the Independent on Sunday. She gives readings and workshops regularly across Wales, and has appeared on Radio Three's arts programme, The Verb.Since 2005 she has been the filter judge for the Cardiff Academi International Poetry Competition, which she won in 2001.

John Barnie (1941-) was brought up in Abergavenny in rural south-east Wales. Poet, fiction writer and essayist, since 1990, he has edited the Welsh cultural magazine Planet. His poetry and fiction explore the border between human culture and the natural world. He performs and plays (slide guitar) with the blues and poetry bands The Salubrious Rhythm Co and the bilingual group Y Bechgyn Drwg/The Bad Boys. His collection of essays, The King of Ashes, won a Welsh Arts Council Prize for Literature in 1990.

Mae Seren yn eich gwahodd chi i noson o farddoniaeth gyda darlleniadau gan Paul Groves, Tiffany Atkinson & John Barnie yn Siop Lyfrau Canolfan y Celfyddydau ar Nos Iau am 6.30pm.

Nodweddir gwaith Paul Groves gan ffraethineb a hiwmor du, ynghyd â meistroaleth lwyr ar ffurf. Yn "Qwerty", ei bumed gasgliad o farddoniaeth, mae ei waith yn amrywio o'r sinistr i'r anghyfforddus a'r hynod frawychus. Ac eto gan ei fod mor dechnegol gywir mae'n cadw ei apêl fel bardd y bardd. Cafodd Paul Groves ei fagu yng Nghymru, bu'n byw am bum mlynedd ar hugain yn Fforest Dean, ac erbyn hyn mae'n byw yn Nhrefynwy. Mae wedi bod yn hynod lwyddiannus mewn cystadlaethau cenedlaethol a rhyngwladol a bu'n cyhoeddi barddoniaeth a beirniadaethau mewn amrywiaeth helaeth o gylchgronau gan gynnwys London Magazine, Poetry Review a The Times Literary Supplement.

Mae Tiffany Atkinson yn ddarlithwraig mewn Saesneg ac Ysgrifennu Creadigol ym Mhrifysgol Aberystwyth. Mae hi'n olygydd The Body: A Reader(Palgrave, 2004) ac mae ei hymchwil bresennol yn archwilio cynrychiolaethau o'r "corff mewn poen" gyda chyfeiriad arbennig at anatomeg, athronyddiaeth, dadansoddi seicolegol a gwahaniaethau hiliol. Bu ei chasgliad cyntaf o farddoniaeth sef Kink and Particle (Seren, 2006), yn ennill Gwobr Jerwood Aldeburgh ar gyfer Casgliad Cyntaf. Cyhoeddwyd ei gwaith hefyd mewn Detholiadau Seren (Seren, 2006), New Welsh Review, Poetry Wales, Orbis, Oxford Poetry, Poetry Review, MsLexia a'r Independent on Sunday. Mae hi'n cyflwyno darlleniadau a gweithdai yn rheolaeidd ledled Cymru , ac wedi cymryd rhan mewn The Verb ar Radio 3. Ers 2005 mae wedi bod yn feirniad ar gyfer Cystadleuaeth Farddoniaeth Ryngwladol Academi Caerdydd a enillwyd ganddi yn 2001.

Magwyd John Barnie (1941-) yn y Fenni yn ne-ddwyrain Cymru. Mae'n fardd ac yn awdur ffuglen ac ers 1990, bu'n olygydd y cylchgrawn diwylliannol Cymraeg Planet. Mae ei waith yn archwilio'r ffin rhwng diwylliant dyn a'r byd naturiol. Mae'n perfformioac yn chwarae gitâr gyda'r band The Salubrious Rhythm Co a'r grwp dwyieithog Y Bechgyn Drwg/The Bad Boys. Bu ei gasgliad o draethodau, The King of Ashes, yn ennill Gwobr Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru am Lenyddiaeth ym 1990.
