The Dartboard for Witches

Contemporary work in textiles

Textile is a material with strong associations. It is our second skin for most of the day, so consciously or not we all have an intimate knowledge of it as a material - how it folds, how it feels. The very familiarity and association of textiles with the everyday domestic has in the past made it difficult to see it used as a serious material for artworks. But in recent years, artists have cut textiles loose from the limitations of domestic and decorative use - wonderful as these are - to explore the material's wider possibilities in carrying meaning. This exhibition brings together works by artists who use textile methods and materials in their fine art practice, often in unexpected ways, with the focus on the human figure.

Gwaith cyfoes mewn tecstiliau

Mae tecstil yn ddeunydd gyda chysylltiadau cryf. Mae'n ail groen i ni am y rhan fwyaf o'r dydd, felly yn ymwybodol neu beidio ‘rydym i gyd yn gyfarwydd iawn ag ef fel deunydd - sut mae'n plygu, sut mae'n tei mlo. Mae'r ffaith bod tecstiliau mor gyfarwydd, a'u bod yn gysylltiedig â phethau bob dydd, wedi ei gwneud hi'n anodd yn y gorffennol i'w hystyried fel deunyddiau addas ar gyfer gwaith celf. Ond dros y blynyddoedd diwethaf, mae tecstiliau wedi cael eu rhyddhau gan artistiaid rhag gyfyngderau eu defnydd domestig ac addurniadol - er mwyn archwilio posibiliadau ehangach y deunydd fel modd i gyfleu ystyr. Mae'r arddangosfa hon yn tynnu at ei gilydd waith gan artistiaid sy'n defnyddio dulliau a deunydd tecstiliau yn eu hymarfer celf, yn aml mewn ffyrdd annisgwyl.
