“The BP Portrait Award show…is filled with personal histories etched into the human face.” SARAH VINE, THE TIMES
The BP Portrait Award from the National Portrait Gallery promotes the very best in
contemporary portrait painting and is one of the most prestigious such competition in the world. Open to all over the age of 18, and with a first-prize of £25,000, the exhibition has proved to be a launch pad for the careers of a number of successful artists.
This year there were almost 1,750 entries from artists around the world, with 55 being selected for exhibition. The prestigious first prize was won by 35-year-old London-basedartist Craig Wylie, the second prize by Simon Davis and the third prize by Robert O'Brien. There is also, for the second time, a BP Young Artist Award for the work of an entrant aged between 18 and 30, which was won by Peiyuan Jiang.
“These are not works addressed to posterity, destined to grace the walls of boardrooms and mock-Tudor drawing rooms. They are very much of the here and now, fleeting moments that somehow tell us something about the subject's entire existence; personalities captured in a single glance, lives expressed in a snapshot.” SARAH VINE, THE TIMES
