William Kentridge: 7 Fragments for George Méliès
An opportunity to see work from one of the world's most influential artists, William Kentridge. Presented here are ‘7 Fragments for George Méliès', ‘Day for Night' and' Journey to the Moon'.
7 Fragments for Georges Méliès is a suite of seven films influenced by the experimental 19th century French filmmaker Méliès - a stage magician who explored film's potential for illusion and visual tricks. Kentridge combines drawing, performance and film making in his ‘Fragments', using mix of live action and stop motion as he explores the artist (himself) in his studio.
Journey to the Moon has a more narrative structure; it uses many of the elements of the ‘Fragments; to tell the tale of an espresso maker-cum-rocket which blasts off towards the moon.
Day for Night (referencing Truffaut's 1970'sfilm of the same name)is a film of ants, presented in negative, in which their movements - directed by sugar water trails - become a celestial galaxy.
The films 7 Fragments for Georges Méliès and Journey to the Moon were presented at the 51st Venice Biennale.
