Hotel Afrique by Stuart Franklin
During 2005 Stuart Franklin moved through the countries of Africa capturing images in and around the elite hotels of many of the capital cities.
These luxurious spaces serve as an interface between the tribal, religious, social and cultural practices of Africa and the uniform blanket of hotel-chain or international business culture. The resulting images arouse conflicting responses. Familiar interiors and the luxury trappings of business travel are found to be found located within the regions of Kinshasa in the African Congo or Rwanda, areas primarily highlighted in the public consciousness for humanitarian reasons but here exhibiting extreme wealth often contrasting with the figures portrayed. It is in this tense medium of culture and counterculture that Hotel Afrique finds its voice as a photographic essay.
Yn ystod 2005 teithiodd Stuart Franklin trwy wledydd Affrica yn cofnodi delweddau i fewn ac oddi amgylch gwestai moethus nifer o'r prif ddinasoedd. Lleolir rhai o'r rhain mewn rhannau o Affrica lle gwelir tlodi mawr a cheir gwrthdaro amlwg iawn rhwng y moesthusrwydd a'r angen. O fewn y cyfrwng dwys hwn o ddiwylliant a gwrth-ddiwylliant y mae‘r arddangosfa yn ffeindio ei llais fel traethawd ffotograffig.
