Lubaina Himid: Talking on Corners, speaking in Tongues
Talking on Corners, Speaking in Tongues is an exhibition of work by the unapologetically political painter from Zanzibar, Lubaina Himid. Through her vivid paintings, Lubaina explores the subtleties of personal stories, histories, memories and ambitions.
"Whether painting, writing, curating or teaching, ideas form and search for other ideas to balance themselves against, colours come and demand to be part of the show.
As the research into texts develops, other colours and ideas push and shove their way into the frame.
What matters is not ‘how will it look?' but ‘what will it do?' ‘what will you do?'. The sustainable impact of the project does indeed sometimes depend on how it looks and the way in which you perceive it, but woven into the dialogue whether painted, written, collaborative or as hidden intervention, there should be an inkling of danger, a call for change, a sense of the gloriousness of possibility and the deliciousness of paint and creativity. "
Lubaina Himid, who has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, is currently Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire.
Exhibition organised with Harris Museum & Art Gallery Preston
