Based on her bestselling graphic novels about Satrapi‘s experience of growing up in 70s Tehran, this is a charming and distinctive animated film for adults that highlights the serious consequences of totalitarianism. Her liberal family are at first optimistic that with the fall of the Shah things will get better. But they soon fear for their daughter, a natural rebel, whose outspoken ways and love of decadent Western music soon brings her into conflict with the mullahs. Smart and sassy as its heroine, much of the wry humour and political edge comes from her innocent questioning of the absurd dogma of the joyless new regime. Most affecting is her enduring relationship with her eccentric, pipe-smoking grandmother, a pillar of strength who is always ready to listen to her troubles and respond with a joke, some gossip or words of wisdom.
