Alan Hoal grew up in southwest Virginia, in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, a region rich in folklore, mountain culture and stories. The inhabitants of these mountain communities owe their heritage to the Welsh, Scottish and Irish settlers who tamed the region over 200 years ago. These tough and hardy immigrants brought their stories with them and those stories have been adapted, over the years, to fit the times and traditions of the Appalachian region. One of the most prominent characters is the sometimes lucky, sometimes tricky and always resourceful Jack - from his heroic image in Arthurian legend to the simple but clever peasant eking out a hardscrabble existence in the mountains of America. Come hear some of these classic tales as told by a modern day southern storyteller.
