Aberystwyth Arts Centre co-ordinates the largest community arts and education programme of any Arts Centre in Wales. Last year we welcomed over 100,000 participants to the many classes, workshops and special events in our programme.

Easter Ceramics Masterclasses

Throwing with Svend Bayer

Tuesday 10 - Friday 13 April

10am - 4pm

Cost £325 (£310)

Svend Bayer is known internationally for his large scale wood fired pots.

During the course, he will teach the basics of throwing large pots including large pieces of clay, and throwing on from coils. Svend Bayer really is a master of large pot throwing, so if you want to extend your skills in this area this is the course for you.

Handbuilding with Sandy Brown: Making Large Things

Sandy Brown is one of Britain's leading ceramicists producing both domestic and sculptural ware.

In this course, Sandy will demonstrate some of the techniques she has developed for making larger ceramic pieces. the course will be a chance for participants to work on a large scale, to be ambitious and adventurous!

The title and intention of this class is aimed and designed to be experimental. It encourages its members to explore and use a wide range of mixed media techniques and applications, both in ideas and materials. This course is generally more suitable to those with creative experience by available to any with an open visual mind.

Young Persons art class is a relaxed friendly class focussing on watercolour painting. We will be mixing colours, and learning to use watercolour with confidence particularly when painting portraits. This course is intended to be especially useful to those taking - or planning to take Art G.C.S.E'S. Participants are welcome to bring their own projects to work on if they wish!

Animation Classes for Young People (12-18)

Want to make your own cartoons?
This class will teach the basics
of stop motion animation using a
wide range of analogue and digital
materials. You can animate even
if you can't draw! The emphasis
will be on developing characters
and storyboards to create your animations. You can then add sound effects, music and graphics to add the finishing touches to your
final masterpiece.

Arts Centre Digilab

The lab is available to anyone on
an open-access basis twice a week from 10 Jan:
Tuesday 3.30pm-6.30pm
Thursdays 3.30pm-6.30pm

With technology including internet/broadband linked computers, colour printers and scanners, film, photo and music editing software, these facilities are available for the general public to use on an open access basis twice a week.  These are not taught sessions, so participants must have a basic knowledge of how to use computer technology.  However, there will be a facilitator on hand to show you round the facilities, and to offer friendly advice and guidance to get you started.

 

All digilab users must complete a registration form and agree to abide by the digilab ‘rules of use’.

Publishing Poetry (18+)

A course mainly for unpublished writers of poetry designed to get them into print. Will include workshops to shape their work, appraisals of the current poetry scene – what publishers and editors want. Tips and pitfalls. Contacts and links. YARN Storytelling Group

No matter what your level of experience you are welcome to come and join the circle for an evening of humour, adventure,

A structured approach to Drama training with separate classes in acting, voice, singing in musical theatre and stage dance included. Through individual classes and group workshops entirely led by theatre professionals, the pupils progress as they follow a course designed to lead them through the different skills in learning to perform and will also be prepared to audition for Arts Centre productions if they wish. This term, our members are working towards their annual main stage and studio productions. Tribal Fusion Bellydance is an eclectic blend of American Tribal Style (ATS), Classical Bellydance, Hip-Hop, Ballet, Classical Indian Dance, Flamenco & other folkloric dances. Lyza's Tribal Fusion stays

Bellydance focused using ATS as her base. The postures and basic moves in this dance style help to develop core strength and stability whilst toning muscles and increasing flexibility. Creative Family Fun!

The Ceramic Gallery will run arts and craft sessions for families, based on themes and exhibitions within the impressive Ceramic Collection of the School of Art, Aberystwyth University.

Activities take place usually on the last Saturday of the month in the Ceramic Gallery downstairs in the Arts Centre. No booking required, drop in between 10am and 1pm.

There is a voluntary small charge for materials (usually £1 per child, adults free) and events last 30-45 minutes and are suitable for families and children aged 3 and over.

Only Connect
A major interdisciplinary laboratory for artists interested in using the latest cutting edge techniques of live film and sound mixing in their work. The only connect lab will be an intensive 3 week process for a limited number of artists who are working in performance, installation or design and wish to collaborate and experiment. BBC Norman Beaton Fellowship
The Arts Centre and theatres around the UK have been invited to join the BBC in it’s search for new talent. The BBC Norman Beaton Fellowship (NBF) is a flagship initiative run by BBC Radio Drama, set up to broaden the range of actors available to Radio Drama producers across the UK by encouraging applicants of all ages from nontraditional training backgrounds.

Electric and acoustic guitar classes covering a varied repertoire from 1950’s Rock ‘n’ Roll to the present day with tutor Mike Eades.

Beginners - learn and play popular simple and enjoyable pieces of music in an easy-to-follow group workshop. No previous musical knowledge is necessary.

Intermediate - build on previous knowledge and experience through the learning and playing of more demanding chord and melodic structures. Some previous musical

knowledge is desirable. Please note: You must bring your own guitar to these  classes. If playing electric guitar, please bring your own amp. An adult will be expected to remain with each child under 12.

Composing and Sequencing on Cubase (12+)

£23 (5 sessions)

Wednesdays from 22 February, 5.30-7pm

Sessions run by Ric Lloyd. The
sessions will focus on how you
can unlock your creative ideas and
use the software to develop them
further using tips and short cuts
you may not have used before.
Activities will be practically based
and will be aimed at both budding
songwriters and those interested in
instrumental composition.

with some experience of Cubase.

Arts Centre Classical Music Training

These well established classes provide an excellent training for children and adults wishing to follow a formal musical education.

In the 17 years since the classes started over 200 pupils have passed Grade 5 and above in the Associated Board Music theory exams, the majority achieving

Distinction. Advanced pupils have also won International Prizes for their examination results.
