Artists in Residence: Dave Cushley

Dave Cushley is an artist currently living and working in South Wales. Exhibiting throughout the UK and internationally his work is an irreverent fusion of the absurd, post-structuralism and an unhealthy obsession with the nature of craft.

His work has always been concerned the associations we have with certain materials or techniques, the deceit involved in the transformation of natural subject matter into purely decorative objects, etc. In the most recent work, this interest is characterised by the use of simple, repetitive, actions, creating organic, non-specific forms. Any intended subject matter is gradually lost within the process of making and the work becomes more about simply bending strips of metal, or the act of tracing a line. The act of making becomes, essentially, futile, serving no purpose other than its own perpetuation. The work is obsessional, always centered on this act, aware of its inherent futility but never ending.

Mae Dave Cushley yn artist sy’n byw ac yn gweithio yn ne Cymru ar hyn o bryd. Gan arddangos ledled y DU ac yn rhyngwladol, mae ei waith yn ymdoddiad amharchus o’r absẃrd, ôl-adeileddaeth ac obsesiwn afiach â natur crefft.

Mae ei waith wastad wedi ymwneud â’r cysylltiadau sydd gennym â rhai deunyddiau neu dechnegau, y twyll sydd ynghlwm â thrawsnewid cynnwys naturiol yn wrthrychau sy’n addurnol yn unig, ac yn y blaen. Yn y gwaith diweddaraf, mae’r diddordeb hwn wedi’i nodweddu gan ddefnyddio gweithrediadau syml, ailadroddus, gan greu ffurfiau amhenodol ac organig. Mae unrhyw gynnwys a fwriedir yn cael ei golli’n raddol yn y broses wneud ac mae’r gwaith yn dod i ymwneud yn fwy â phlygu stribedi o fetel neu’r weithred o olrhain llinell. Mae’r weithred o wneud yn dod yn ddi-fudd yn y bôn, heb unrhyw ddiben ar wahân i’w pharhad ei hun. Mae’r gwaith yn obsesiynol, yn canolbwyntio bob amser ar y weithred hon, yn ymwybodol o’i oferedd cynhenid ond yn ddi-ben-draw.
