This exhibition considers the use of collage in recent British art, with over 50 works drawn from the Arts Council Collection. The show traces uses of collage from the influences of the Parisian avant-garde in the early work of Ben Nicholson and Surrealists Eileen Agar and Roland Penrose, through to present day practitioners. Works range from traditional collage on paper to more experimental applications in sculpture and film, with artists including Grayson Perry, Ben Nicholson, Eduardo Paolozzi, The Hackney Flashers, Richard Hamilton, Patrick Caulfield and Chris Ofili.
The exhibition title Transmitter/Receiver comes from the words of French critic Nicolas Bourriaud, ‘we are no longer either passive receivers or authoritative cultural transmitters, but potentially both simultaneously’.
