King Tide refers to the highest tides which occur when the Earth, Sun and Moon are aligned at ‘perigee’ and ‘perihelion’; the work here alludes to similarly powerful, invisible forces that may be at play in all our lives. This series of photographs, made over a ten year period, focuses on ‘small stories’ documenting aspects of contemporary life in Wales. Remaining open to the fictions and contradictions of contemporary life, it gently reflects on home, family, the passing of time and our relationship to memory and history.
David Barnes’ practice is grounded in long-term collaborations within communities in south Wales and uses a layered approach combining photography, film and installation. He won the Photography Prize in the Welsh Artist of the Year in 2013.
