Michael Cardew: A Potter and His FollowersThe Ceramics Collection, Aberystwyth University
Michael Cardew (1901–1983) was an inspirational and paradoxical figure in the history of studio pottery. Despite an upper middle class background and an Oxford education he chose the ‘simple life’ making utilitarian ceramics within the British slipware tradition. Cardew had many pupils and followers who admired both his work and his values including Ray Finch who took over at Winchcombe Pottery and his son Seth and grandson Ara Cardew. Many of these potters are represented in this exhibition which has been arranged also to mark the publication of the new biography of Cardew by Tanya Harrod.
