BARBER - SUMMER MUSIC op. 31
Premiered in 1956 by the first-desk players of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Samuel Barber's only piece of chamber music for winds has become a staple of the repertoire for this combination. Evoking the heady, languorous summer evenings of the Deep South and tinged by echoes of jazz, the work's single movement form passes through various musical episodes which reappear transfigured, showcasing each member of the ensemble equally.
A deliciously wicked setting of three of Roald Dahl's most famous poems, brought to life and complemented by Martin Butler's rhythmically energetic and colourful score.
